I first learned "Kumbaya" in 1959 from friends in high school band. I think they learned it in MYF (Methodist Youth Fellowship) in Michigan. I never sang it after that.
We sang when we were returning from away football games. Someone would start it, and others would begin verses with whatever verb they thought of. Usually "kumbaya" was sung between verses, but it was open-ended and relatively unstructured.
